The Alta du Toit School is not exclusively for learners with Down's Syndrome. In fact, Down's Syndrome is but one of 34 genetic disorders discovered by medical research amongst our learners to date. Apart from those, there are other reasons for intellectual handicaps as well, such as complications prior to birth, complications during the birth process, brain injuries (e g car accidents), abnormalities of the brain, skull and central nervous system, near drowning accidents and alcohol abuse during pregnancy. Some learners have secondary handicaps such as epilepsy, cerebral palsy, auditory and visual problems and behavioral deviancy. All our learners are severely mentally disabled. The Alta du Toit School strives to create a favourable climate in which these children can be given the maximum stimulation.
