On September 4, 1954, a second child was born to Reverend Daan and Mrs. Alta du Toit: a girl, Alta, with Down's Syndrome. Her life would serve a higher purpose: Reverend Daan recognised the need to establish a school for children with severe intellectual disabilities. After a long struggle the Alta du Toit School first opened its doors to 20 learners in a wooden building in Bellville on July 14, 1964. Through the years the number of learners increased to such an extent that a beautiful new building-complex was built in Kuilsriver in 1981.Today there are about 350 learners between the ages of 5 and 18 from the Western Cape and Northern Cape Provinces. There are hostel facilities for 170 learners and eleven minibusses bring day learners to school from the northern suburbs of Cape Town.
